The Advantages of a Dog Play Pen

in Pets

When you bring a new puppy home to meet the family everyone will be so excited to see him that they will put up with all sorts of behaviour, from chewing on slippers to jumping all over them.  However, once he gets bigger most people are not  happy with this kind of behavior so it is best to get started right with the new puppy and teach him proper household habit right away.  One way to help train your puppy is to use a dog play pen.

These are metal cages (or sometimes plastic) which can be folded away when not in use. They are very light, allowing them to be moved from room to room.  The idea is that the puppy is allowed to be in whichever room the family is, learning to interact with his new family, without being able to get into trouble.

The dog play pen and dog kennel will help to house train the puppy as he won’t want to make the place where he lives and sleeps dirty so he will try his best to hold on until you take him out of the pen (make sure that you take him outside regularly or he’ll have no choice but to do his business in there).

You can fill the pen with lots of fun toys to entertain him and to help teach him that these are the things that he is allowed to play with.  This way, when you let him out of the play pen you will be able to give him lots of praise when he plays with one of the allowed toys while saying firmly ‘No!’ if he starts to chew on anything that he shouldn’t touch.

The dog play pen will also get him used to the idea of being kept in a dog run so that once he gets bigger you will be able to move him outside (if you so decide) into a run without him feeling anxious. However you should know that your dog will always be happier living with you than relegated to the back yard. A dog run or a dog kennel are excellent places for short period of times.
