Comparing Plasma And LCD Televisions

in Electronics

Plasma televisions have been around since 1997 and first became popular due their screen size. The image you see is created by tiny pixels that sit in a chamber filled with gas. The pixels are ionized with an electrical current to give a very detailed picture on the screen. Compared to LCD televisions, the plasma screens are much larger, although this advantage is decreasing every year as LCD technology catches up.

The advantage of plasma is that it is much cheaper to make these massive screen sizes, so the benefit of lower costs is what attracts most people who want a very big viewing experience. Plasma televisions also have a slight edge when watching tv at night, with sharper response times and better contrast from dark to light. The choice of plasma and LCD is huge, with thousands of electrical stores such as argos selling them for really cheap prices. As the technology moves on, the prices become lower and lower, which is good news for the consumer. In fact the prices have more than halved in the last few years, and will continue to do so until the next technology comes along to take their place.

The biggest problem with plasma is that you can get screen burn. This is caused when the tv is left on pause for a long period of time, or if a tv station logo is constantly in the same place. LCD is immune to this burning. Another problem is the actual life of the plasma tv. Because they use gases to create the picture, they can become faded over time and lose their ability to glow as brightly as they could when new. The LCD tv’s use a bulb to produce the picture, it is simply a case of replacing this bulb if it begins to fade. The bulbs are readily available from most retail stores such as littlewoods direct in the UK or Best Buy in the US, and they are not as expensive as you might think. Even fitting them is not too difficult if you have a little know how.

The final advantage of the plasma television is the viewing angle. You can see more of the screen at an angle compared to an LCD tv. This is useful if you have a large room and want to be able to watch the tv without moving your position.
