Loading down your fly fishing chest pack can be a huge problem for a lot of anglers. The problems come when they begin crawling over loose, wet, and slippery rocks to make their way to their favorite honey hole. The weight from the heavy, loaded down fly fishing vest will begin putting more and more stress on their ankles and knees, causing fatigue, and then the irritability and impatience set in. This happens before anglers realize it, and most of the time, won’t relate it to the weight of their fly vest. This can easily be avoided by only carrying the essentials with you on your day trips.
First, you are going to have to make sure that you have a pair of clippers with you, needle nose pliers, and maybe even a pair of forceps. Removing flies from the mouths of small fish is a pain, but as long as you have needle nose pliers, and forceps handy, you will have a much easier time at it. When you need to retie a fly, instead of using your teeth, you can grab the line clippers to give you a clean cut.
Next, you are going to want to make sure that you have your extra flies with you in a pouch of their own, your polarized sunglasses, and of course, your hat. While your hat doesn’t really fit into your fly fishing chest pack, it is essential for helping you reduce the glare on the water. You can store your extra flies in one of the pouches of the vest, and keep your polarized glasses on your face. By taking these few essential items with you, you are going to allow yourself more time to focus on catching fish, and less time dealing with the hassles of carrying too much gear.
