Home Evacuation Plan And Shelter In Place

in Emergency Preparedness

Why does one need a home evacuation plan?  With the number of natural disasters, as well as other unforeseen near catastrophes around the world, there is a chance that you might find yourself without shelter if a disaster were to strike in your area.  So it is necessary that you have a home evacuation plan at hand as well as having an emergency shelter in place plan.  If you have a home evacuation plan at hand, you can shelter your family until you are rescued.

Proper practice and planning can make all the difference between survival and destruction.  Here are a number of aspects which you need to consider while mapping out your home evacuation plan. Many people made shelters in the yards during the Second World War and stocked them with clothes, food, beds, shoes and medicines.  Not sure that you need to go to the extreme of building a bomb shelter but designate a safe dry place that your family can meet and have supplies there on hand.

Which is the best way to escape from your home?  Do you have an alternate emergency exit in case the first way is cut off?  Practice these escape drills.  Also make sure that you have a contingency plan to be implemented by every member of the family in case you get separated.

Practice using an emergency pack.  Have it all ready to use.  The exits and entry points of your house including windows need to be mapped out.  Label the first escape route and then a secondary escape route.  Designate a place outside your house where you are going to meet in case of an emergency.  Practice this plan with all the members of your family until everybody can follow it automatically.

Buy a fire escape ladder if your house has more than one level.  Have shoes and a flashlight, near every bed.  Make up a disaster kit and keep it in such a place that you can get easy access to it during an emergency. Having emergency essentials ready when you need them is key to preparedness.

Nothing can prepare you for all emergencies, but having a good home emergency plan coupled with careful planning and preparation can help your family to be safe.
