How To Catch Post Spawn Crappie

in Fishing

Most fishermen love to catch Crappie. And most of them know that come Spring time, Crappie are going to be in the shallow waters spawning and provide easy opportunity to anyone with a hook and line. But what happens after the Crappie spawn? Normally after the spawn is over, Crappie fishermen turn their interest to other fish because they do not know where the Crappie went or how to catch them. Luckily, I’m here to give you a few Crappie fishing tips on where to look for post spawn Crappie and how to catch them.

I fish Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma a lot for Crappie. This is one of the better lakes in the nation in terms of size and numbers of Crappie. But like everywhere else, after the spawn is over, most fishermen turn their interest into Bass or Catfishing. But wise anglers can still locate and catch good numbers of Crappie after the spawn if they just know where to look for them.

One of the best things I did in order to find Crappie after the spawn was to hire a Crappie guide on Lake Eufaula to show me how to locate the fish and then go about catching them. I take several guided fishing trips per year with various guides and learn their techniques. And I must say, that Summer fishing for Crappie can be much better than fishingfor them in the Spring.

First, Crappie on the main lake portion will move out into deeper water. Often times they’ll be along the first drop off away from the spawning areas. If you were catching them along the banks in your favorite lake, then look for the first major break away from the bank. Often times this will be in the 12 to 20 foot range. Crappie love to hold over this breaks, especially if there is a brush pile somewhere close!

Eufaula also has creek arms that are long and wide. Many people think that the Crappie they found up the creeks in April are now out in the main lake come Summer. That’s just not true. Crappie do not move that far. These Crappie are use to shallow water and you can find them in 2 to 8 foot of water around standing Timber or rip rap. Try using two jigs, one dark colored and one light colored, spaced about 18 inches apart and fished around standing timber or slowly trolled adjacent to the rip rap. And hang on!

Now get out and discover post spawn Crappie fishing. It really can be much more rewarding than Spring time fishing!
