The Importance of Forestry Inspection Lines

in Yard, Garden & Patio

forestry inspection linesWhen a forest is young is very easy for a person who needs to inspect the individual trees to get in amongst the trees. But as a forest starts to age the trees begin to close in. Once this ageing process has reached about 10 years any access to the forest will be reduced to only the first few trees. This is where forestry inspection lines are needed. A forestry inspection line is a way of achieving access all the way through a forest. The inspection lines are in general placed into Irish forestry at around the age when first thinning is required.

First thinning is the process of sorting out the good trees from the bad. Once a forest gets the age of between 14 years and 20 years of age the time has come to try and reduce the number of trees that are standing in a forest. At the beginning of the plantation life, the trees are spaced at 2 m intervals. This is to try and make the most of the land whilst giving the trees enough room to grow. But, once they reach the age of 14 to 20 years in this space needs to be increased. Therefore, about a third of the overall forest volume is removed. This allows the second two thirds of the forest to grow with more available resources.

The forestry inspection lines are placed at 100 m intervals around the circumference of the forest. The lines are opened by removing the bottom branches from the trees. This process is carried on throughout the forest until a tunnel through trees is created. Once the inspection lines have been placed through the forest at 100 m intervals, a grid system is set up to allow an inspector to access anywhere in the forest to 100 meters of any other spots.
