Once the new artificial turf is installed and everything looks wonderful, the next step is to make sure that you have all of the tools required to keep it looking tip top. The problem with a turf playing field is that a lot of people run all over it and tend to make sudden movements before changing direction in the blink of an eye. To top all of that off, these athletes seem to have no qualms about smashing their bodies, and the bodies of their opponents, heavily into the turf.
The result is that it doesn’t take terribly long before that pristine piece of artificial turf is starting to look just a little shabby.
That’s why artificial turf maintenance is an important part of the grounds-keeping duties, just as the maintenance of a natural grass pitch is important.
Although the tasks are a little different you are essentially performing the same role. You are taking a used patch of playing field and renewing it back to its original condition so that it is ready to be messed up again a week later.
The main areas that must be addressed are the cleanliness of the turf. Over a period of time there will be an inevitable build up of dirt, leaf litter and rubbish that gets caught in the grass fibres. Unless there has been some significant rainfall, only a small proportion of this will be able to get through the turf matting and into the subsoil. So a cleaner will have to be used to lift away the debris lying on the surface of the turf.
Other grooming tools are also used to help fluff the grass back up to its original position ensuring that the looks and functionality as well as the safety of the players is taken care of. An artificial turf field requires some maintenance but it is far less than the work required to get a grass field back to top shape, and even then there is the risk that the weather will make it unplayable by the weekend.
