You see them all over the internet and wonder if you are really saving money by buying discount printer ink cartridges. This question has been asked by people since cartridges hit the market many years ago. Is there really a benefit to buying these discounted cartridges, or will they break your printer?
Discount cartridges come in several different forms. You can buy off brand cartridges that are made by a third party company, refurbished (or remanufactured) cartridges, or refilled name brand cartridges. Depending on the brand of your printer, one or more of these options may be available to you. Off brand cartridges often come in large “value packs” where you get several black cartridges and a few of the different colors all in one package. This option is good if you are buying a lot of ink at once.
Refurbished cartridges are when a third party companies disassemble the unit, replace the worn parts, and refill the container with new ink using a syringe.
These cartridges are then tested and repackaged. This is a not a good option if you have a printer that reads cartridge serial numbers. In an off brand or remanufactured cartridge, the serial numbers are reset at the factory. The printer then reads a new serial number and works properly. When you have your cartridge refilled, then the printer still “thinks” the cartridge is out of ink. Some printers will not print if the cartridge reads out of ink, even if there is still ink left. Some people have encountered this issue when using discount printer cartridges because the printer does not read the serial numbers correctly, or it reads them sporadically, and that can affect how the printer functions.
Before buying discount cartridges it is always wise to do some research online to see if other people with the same brand/model of printer as you had some issues with these particular ink cartridges. Visit discount printer ink cartridges or portable printer scanners for more information.
