Starting A Business | Focus and Action

in Small Business

If you’re starting a business, it can seem like a very scary and complex thing.  The overwhelming amount of information and advice you get from friends, family and the internet can become so daunting that you don’t even know where to begin. Let me simplify starting a business a bit for you.

Let me help you find some focus so you know where all of your actions must lead in order for your business to become successful. Sales Is Everything Listen, without sales your business is nothing.

There is a reason why the first line in a financial statement is revenue.  It’s because it’s of first priority and every other number on your financials will somehow relate to the revenue.  That is where you focus needs to lie. Don’t think about profit, margins, ratios, etc just yet.  If you don’t have sales and revenue, all those other things don’t matter. Even if you don’t sell a product, you have to sell your service or yourself.

Even if your profit margins aren’t that great, don’t worry about it until you get your sales up and running. Sales is a tough thing for most people, but if you own your own business, you need to have a grasp of this.  It’s not something you should outsource.  Even if you hire a sales rep to do it for you, you need to take ownership of this process.

Here are some basic things you need to start out with. Starting Sales The first thing you need to do in getting sales is to get a list.  You need to generate sales leads so you have a list to start out with.  Without leads, you have no sales.  Go in order. Next, you need to start going after the prospects on that list.  Don’t wait for stuff.  Don’t wait until you have a perfect sales pitch down.  Don’t wait for your business to get to a certain point.  Just do it. Too many people make the mistake of using excuses to not go after the people on their list.  Remember, your sales pitch will improve over time as you sell, not by sitting around hoping the magic pitch will just appear.
