Tattoos are very popular these days, which is a big change from previous years, when they were seen as the preserve of criminals and other unsavory types.
However, if you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, it’s important to think your decision through properly, as you’ll be living with it for the rest of your life (or going through the expensive and painful tattoo removal process!). So here are some things that you should consider before taking the plunge:
Design
The first thing to think about is the type of design that you want to get. There are lots of options here – you can get a small tattoo or a large one, colour or just black and white, a simple design or highly detailed one. In fact, the choice can be overwhelming if you don’t already have a clear idea of the kind of design you would like. Still, it’s a good idea to spend some time browsing the wealth of tattoo designs that are available both online and in local tattoo shops. This will help you to get ideas, although you don’t need to go with a premade design. If you want a really unique tattoo, you can commission a tattoo artist to do one for you at a custom basis, although this will naturally be more expensive than going with pre-existing tattoo flash.
Cost
Getting a tattoo can be an expensive business, and the prices of tattoos will vary a lot, depending on factors such as the size, and level of detail of the design, the area where you want it placed and the expertise of the artist. It’s important not to try to cut costs too much here, as you do get what you pay for to a large extent. So if you can’t afford the tattoo or artist you really want, wait a few months to save up for it if necessary, rather than compromising.
Placement
A third thing to consider is the location of your tattoo. Most people get tattoos in areas that can easily be concealed with clothing, and this is certainly a wise choice if you work in an area where tattoos are still frowned upon, although there are ways to cover up tattoos, such as by using make-up. Also, many tattoo artists won’t work on highly visible areas like the hands or above the neck, so if you want a tattoo on the face, you might find it harder to find a reputable artist who will do it (an exception to that rule might be for women who want an eyebrow tattoo). Some areas are also more painful to tattoo than others, such as over bony parts, which is something to bear in mind if you have a low pain threshold.
Take the time to think about these things before getting your tattoo, and you’ll be less likely to for tattoo removal options in years to come!
