Using A Grey Area Rug To Mute A Room

in Floors

The general color scheme of any room has a lot to do with your mood as you enter it. If you have a bright room that features reds and oranges prominently, you might feel energized and charged up. On the converse, if  the dominant colors are cool blues and greys, you will feel more relaxed and find your surroundings more conducive to reading or writing.

A grey area rug can be used to help mute colors of a room so that they have less of an effect on your mood and allow you to focus on the tasks you need to do instead of your surroundings. A good example of this is placing a grey area rug in the bathroom where you previously had white tile in contrast to your blue walls. The white and blue contrast is very distracting, but adding the grey area rug mutes the harshness of the white and brings it closer in tune to the color of the blue, making the bathroom a more relaxed environment.

Floor rugs of any color can be used in this manner, as they are designed to be accent pieces to be used in just about any room. The type of material the rug is made from can have an effect on how well it serves its purpose as well. Shag rugs can have a better muting effect due to the different shades created from the dimensions of the shag, while closer berber rugs will have less of an effect. Grey area rugs are best put to use in a room that is already cool and somewhat muted, since grey does not fit well with brighter colors such as red or orange. Blues and greens are perfect for a grey area rug, so take this into consideration when considering the room you will place your rug in.
