Some people may shun the use of contact paper in the home- after all, it’s just cheap vinyl back by an adhesive, right? While they are right that the material is inexpensive and wouldn’t usually serve to make a room feel like a quality space, it does serve several useful purposes in and around the home. It is made of vinyl, which is a petroleum product, is toxic and unsustainable, but most people tend to use it anyway. Perhaps consumer pressure to have contact paper made from environmentally friendly materials will yield a better material. In the meantime, sometimes sacrifices will be made, and it can be put to good use in many common household applications.
The first and most popular use is for decoration. Colored contact paper or with decorative motifs can be used for this purpose. A great example of such use is in children’s room, where great wall decals can be created quickly and inexpensively. Remember the kids will outgrow the style in less than a year.
Some decorations are functional, as when used in windows as a cheap way to gain some privacy while still admitting light. A semi transparent type can be used for that. Black contact paper can also be used for blocking out most of the light if need be, as in a dedicated home theater. The many contact paper patterns include natural ones like granite, and the popular wood grain contact paper.
One of the most popular types of contact paper nowadays is chalkboard contact paper, which can come in rolls of 18″ x 6′. This is a cheap way to install a chalkboard on a wall, and the adhesives used nowadays allow it to be moved and stuck in another location. The great thing about this kind of chalkboard is that it can be cut to the size you desire. Kids can get their own private chalkboard if that allows them to draw in peace, and you can even cut them down very small so that they become portable.
