Xootr Street, A Kick Scooter for Adults Can Be Cool

in Cycling

Seth Godin in his book, Purple Cow, talks about the bell curve for marketing with early adopters on the left, John Q. Public in the middle, and late adopters on the right. I guess I’m on the right because although the razor kick scooter fad is dying down, I’m sure in love with my new Xootr Street!

Xootr makes kick scooters for adults which means it might look like a razor scooter but it’s a lot bigger. The deck is big enough for two size 12 mens shoes. The handle bars raise up to well above the waist and the wheels are large enough to go over tram tacks and imperfections in sidewalks and roads. And speaking of the wheels, on a smooth service, they glide great.

The model I bought is their top-of-the-line model known as the “Street,” which features the highest weight limit (300 lb), and a CNC milled aluminum deck. Xootr’s cheapest model is the cruz which features the same chassis as the Street but with a wood deck. I’m a little on the heavy side which is why I went with the Street.

So why do I love my Xootr Street? Well it’s really convenient. If you live in a city, especially in an apartment, and need only to travel short distances, it’s a great way to get around. It’s also great for mix mode travel, I.e., going a short distance, then hopping on a bus or train and then having to walk again. For me, I can ride the Xootr Street from the front door of my apartment into the elevator and ride out once on the ground floor. On busy days, here in Japan, sometimes bicycle parking can be a problem to find. No problem fold up the Xootr and carry it around the store.

If you can overcome the fact that some people may stare and laugh at you, a kick scooter is an excellent way to get around. I’m a big white guy in Japan so people stare at me anyways so getting over people staring at me on a scooter has opened my eyes to a great form of transportation.
